Once upon a time, When lake (Yeri) in this place was flooded, and the water started entering into the town, Sri Ramar & Sri Lakshmana saved the people. They stood themself as a guard on the lake to prevent the water flow into the town. So, this perumal is called Yeri Kaattha Ramar.

To add one more crown to this holy place, the sanskrit college is located very near to the temple, where students can learn sastras, vedas and vaishnava samprathayams in depth.
